Genetic Egineering

A genetically engineered rat was the first thing to be tested with IGF-1.scientists noticed that while people were getting older and slowing down that the he-man was still the same as when the shot was given to it.Sweeney predictied that if the drug workes on rats then it should be a ble to work on humans too.IGF-1 is an insulin growth factor that makes muscles bones liver,etc grow and get stronger;repairs muscles when fractured.I think this a good drug for the elderly and disabled.It is good for the elderly because it told to help fractures and help you stay stronger longer.Elderly people need this for when they get a fracture it wont be as bad and this drug can help that.This drug also helps with stunted growth.It aslo helps with the human growth hormone.The more IGF-1 you get for this helps your human growth hormones.So in other words genetic engineering is great for people with problems in there body and growing right or have disorders and also elderly people.

  2. He-man was the first mouse to be genetically engineered. Soon after He-man was born, Dr. H. Lee Sweeney injected its muscles with a synthetic gene that instructed its muscle cells to produce more IGF-1.This IGF-1 is a protein that makes muscles grow and helps them repair themselves when they've been damaged. The he-man performs work as it used to when it young. In the article it says, "He effortlessly climbs a ladder with 120 grams of weights—equal to three times his body weight—strapped on his back."
    This product can works on human as well as human since human and Mice have similar DNA. The only problem is that it can't be performed on humans today because it will be hard to control the growth of some genes. If it were performed on human it will have many benefits like helping people maintain their strength as they get older. It can also help disabled people have stronger muscles to help them walk if they can't. In conclusion like everything else genetic engineering has its benefits and disadvantages.

  3. IGF-1 is a protein that "makes muscles grow and helps them repair themselves when they've been damaged." Researchers at Penn have discovered away to force muscle cells to produce more IGF-1. This synthetic gene was first tested on a mouse, creating the first genetically engineered mouse. After a while it was clear that the synthetic gene does its job. The mouse, which was named He-man, grew to have unnatural physique. He was much larger than other mice and could climb a ladder with weight "equal to three times his body weight" strapped to his back. He-man also showed no signs of aging or muscle deteriorating.

    The researchers at Penn recognize the value of this technology. They expect that soon in then near future, their will be athletes illegally competing using this gene. On the other hand, this technology could be a huge benefit to the elderly or the sick because it prevents muscle deterioration and greatly helps to repair damaged muscle tissue. This could be a boon on the elderly who are unable to produce IGF-1 due to their age.

    This synthetic gene has potential to do plenty of good. It also has to potential to cause a lot of unfair advantages when it comes to athletics. The ethics of using this gene on athletes is still being worked out by professionals, but the Penn researchers seem to be confident that soon they will be allowed to test the gene on humans. They expect it will have the same results on humans that it did on He-man. In my opinion, the gene will be great for medical purposes. I think that it should be banned from athletics because of its potential for cheating. This is tricky, however, as the only way to determine if a player is using the gene is by muscular biopsy, which the article states will never happen.

This product can not works on mice as well as human since human and Mice have different type of DNA, and also The problem is that it can't be performed on humans today because it will be hard to control the growth of some genes. If it is performed on human it will have many benefits like helping people control their strength as they get older. It can also help disabled people have stronger muscles to help them walk if they can't. What if I told you there was such a thing only it wasn't just some animal, it was a mouse. In an unmarked cage in in the bowels of the University of Pennsylvania Department of Physiology lives a mouse named He-Man. He-man is often known as the "future of sports." After He-man was born a team of Pennsylvania's researchers, injected his muscles with a synthetic gene that instructed his genes to produce more IGF-1.

    IGF-1 is a shorter name or version of insulin-liked growth factor-1. IGF-1 is a protein that, in a nutshell makes muscles grow, it also helps repair muscles when they've been damaged or broken. There is only so much that a human body can take especially after we reach a certain age. Somethin similar happen to Carl Lewis annd Jerry Rice just to name a few. However, such a thing hasn't happen to oour friend the little mouse. Sweeney, the man in charge, predicted that if such a drug should work on a mouse, then it should work on a human as well.

    In some places such a drug has led people to believe it should be banned because of the effeet it has on people. I personally believe that people have the ability to do what they want, so if they take any kind of drug that's not pescription they should know the risk ythey ut themselves in. I believe that if a athlete for example decides to take insulin or "steroids" its at his own risk and people's body function different.

    He-man, a mouse, was named by the students of University of Pennsylvania. They injected the mouses muscles with a gene so that the muscles cells would produce more IGF-1. IGF-1 is a protein that makes the muscle grow and repair itself. When we exercise we produce alot of IGF-1 but as we get older we don't produce as much which keeps our muscles from being big and strong. They don't repair and aren't strong anymore. He-man is still as strong as he was in his younger years because of the muscle injection.
    Sweeney thinks that in the near future humans will be able to inject Igf-1. He thinks athletes will then illegally use this gene. Benefit wise he thinks it can help the elderly, by preventing muscle deterioration and help repair damaged muscle tissue. This gene can be good, but also cause unfair advantages. Researchers plan to be able test this on humans. They believe it will work as well as it did on He-man.

    I think IGF-1 should onlyy be used medically. I believe if athletes were to use it, it would be unfair. The only reason i think it should be used medically is for the elderly, disabled, and those with growth problems.

  7. insulin-like growth factor 1 aka (igf-1) is a protein that,in a nutshell, makes muscles grow and keeps them repair themselves when they've been damaged. as we age muscles stop producing igf-1. it happened to many famous athletes but not He-man. He-man is a rat experiment a college was doing on and he's a rat. his muscles are 60% greater then a normal rat.
    i think it is a good idea to have igf-1 drug made because it helps the muscles stay stronger. you dont have to worry about your muscles giving out and having to go through serious injuries.the bad thing abt it is the effects it would have in the long run

  8. Genetic engineering is a process that scientist believe will help athletes perform better and play at an older age than they already do. The drug they believe will help athletes play longer is a drug called IGF-1, which is a gene repair and enhances muscle tissue when it is damaged. However,IGF-1 has only been tested on a mousse named HE-man. Research shows tha since they day he was injected (2 years ago) his muscles are mighty as ever and greater than a normal mouse. Scientist also believe that if this drug was out a long time ago and tested on humans and worked that most athletes wouldnt have had to retire at the ages of 30-35.They also tested IGF-1 on a fly which failed because the fly could fly off the ground due to losing power and not being able to lift its wings. I do not think that genetic engineering is a good idea in humans because the gene could sit sullenly in its new home and refuse to express.Also thee defense mechanisms could attack the virus and cause a major organ to shut down.Scientist also wound't be able to control the effects if the injection was to go wrong and the gene would grow uncontrolably.

    The people that could benefit off of IGF-1 or GHRH (growth-hormone-releasing hormone) if it were legal would be athletes and older people who still want to have that young feeling in their body.

    This article is all about how researchers at Penn. University use muscle growth supliments and study their effects and how they work. They give examples on what athletes have these advantages and how the supliments help them. The supliment helps by allowing their bpodies to outlast longer than usual. It states thst by the time a person is 40+, they will still have the strength and endurance they had when they were 20 years younger.


    If an athlete is to use and kind of muscle growth supliment, it needs to be something that is not for a benefit. If it is a perscription drug or supliment that they have to take for another reason, but muscle growth or something like that is just a side effect, that is different. This topic has been talked about for a very long rime. Athletes or any other kind of professional that involovces being acrive knows about all this already. It should be known what can and cannot be done.

  10. Penn.University used supliments of muscle growth to study how muscles work.The article has given examples of how the most athletic people have an ability to compete and do better in sports then other.Supliments help their bodies last longer then usual.
    Their is a drug that is believe called IGF-1 which is gene repair and allows the atheklete to grow muscles alot faster.So that they can do better in their sport.This drug has only been tested on a mouse and it is a very long process to get this.

    I don't think this should be legal or tested on humans for the simple fact it can damage something important in your body. humans should work hard to become a better athlete not cheat their way in life. taking that medicine will eventually take a tole on the human body if its taken for a long period of time

    AT Penn State University they conducted a experiment on a rat. They named the rat He-man for obvious reason after you read my summary. He-man got injected with a insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). A summary on IGF-1 is that it allows your body and muscles to last longer than usual. It repairs muscles after they been damaged faster than your body could by itself. So when they injected He-man they saw outstanding results. He-man started to take on a more physic shape and could do better and fster than other rats could. So they took on the assumption that tjis could work for humans. And now it could possibly e banned from athletic sports becuz its a form of steroids. I believe it could be a good idea for the non-athlete person. Such as elderly and cripple people. It could give them longer and happier lives. As for athletes It should be automatically banned. Any substance thats gives your body an advantage over other athletes body should be banned.

At the university of pennsylvania's department of physiology is a genetically altered mouse named he-man. they injected his muscles with a synthetic gene that instructed its muscle cells to produce more IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor-1). this made him not a usual mouse.IGF-1 is a protein that, in a nutshell, makes muscles grow and helps them repair themselves when they've been damaged. as we age our muscles stop producing IGF-1.it has happen to many athletes but not he-man. when he was injected two years ago he grew exceptionally large muscles and those muscles keep producing IGF-1.his muscle mass is 60% greater than that of a normal mouse.
    i believe that IGF-1 should be used for people who really need it when they get up in age.if an athlete uses it, it would be a gain up on other athletes because their muscles wouldn't produce as much IGF-1 as one who has been injected.it would make their muscles be more stronger than a normal person also, but it may also mess up something in the body.
